Brussels Research Centre on Innovation in Learning and Diversity
The Brussels Research Centre on Innovation in Learning and Diversity (BILD) is a research group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. BILD approaches learning as a central analytical lens to examine how educational and cultural contexts are shaped and transformed. The group investigates how learning is supported and facilitated across diverse environments, and how these processes contribute to participation, professional agency, and lifelong learning. Learning is understood as a situated and mediated process, unfolding across both formal and informal contexts.
BILD's activities are organised into two closely connected research units. The Learner-Centred Practices & Education Systems unit examines how learning can be fostered and supported within educational systems, with a focus on self-regulated learning, teachers’ professional development, and the role of digital technologies and AI in teaching and learning. The Arts, Cultural Practices & Participation unit examines how participation, engagement, and mediation are constituted and transformed within artistic and cultural practices, with attention to cultural mediation, digital access to the arts, and the inclusion of groups facing structural barriers to cultural participation.
